GalaxyMania: Earthlings to the Rescue

Client: Two Bit Circus Foundation

Goal: Develop a traveling activation to get students excited about Makey Makeys.

Demographic: Middle school students, with the ability to scale up or down.

Pitch: Two Bit, an alien AI ship from The Midway, crash-landed while on a research mission. She needs your help to reboot her system and send data back to the Motherboard of Motherboards, M.O.M, or she’ll be grounded for life!

Team: Daryl Choa (Game Designer + Fabricator + Artist), Aubrey Isaacman (Game Designer + Writer + Fabricator), and Jacob Surovsky (Programmer).

Responsibilities: Game design, fabrication, art, and copyediting.

Platform: Unity and Makey Makey.

Project Summary: Galaxymania: Earthlings to the Rescue was designed to get students excited about making alternative controllers with Makey Makey.

Aubrey and I were responsible for the concept development and game design. We worked together to write the script and design the story flow. The idea behind the experience was to teach students about circuits first by having them connect wires to the control panel, have students test out their circuit connections, and then play a game with the newly connected control panels.

Aubrey worked on the fabrication of the control panels, while I worked on the fabrication of the alien AI ship. The idea was to design a casing that would go around a laptop to make the experience feel more out of this world.

I prototyped the casing out of cardboard, and laser cut pieces on a Glowforge. Unfortunately, due to the small bed size, I was limited in my design. I focused on the aesthetics.

We delivered a proof of concept of the experience.
